Valis III (Turbo CD): Hidden Bonus Items!

Thanks to Chris Covell for the pics and info!

Besides having more levels, better music and nicer cutscenes than the Genesis version, Valis III for the Turbografx-16 had some extra stuff buried deep inside its binary that no one would ordinarily know about. However, Chris Covell found these hidden extras and extracted them. The first thing he found was the following message:

VISUAL DEBUGGER Ver 1.40 BY JUNPEH --- Message to HU7CD programmers. -- Hellow everybudy. How are you?. I am fine. Please phone to me when if you read this message. I am waiting your friendly messages.

Interesting, eh? Next up were these SD pictures:

As if that wasn't enough, he also found these (apparently unused) pictures of a Valis Roulette game!

I have to wonder about the purpose of those pictures... maybe there was to be a hidden Valis-themed Roulette game as some kind of a bonus round. We may never know for sure. However, the last two screens contain some interesting info, according to Chris: "That last pair of images is the most interesting of them all because they make mention of a roulette contest that gamers can play... The last image above shows how to fill out a postcard for the contest and send it to Telenet Japan. That's pretty amazing. I wonder what rare stuff you could have won with this one?"

Since originally finding these hidden items, Chris has discovered a little more info about them. Here's what he has to say: "I recently bought the Japanese version of Valis III, and I discovered that the hidden anime pics are from a known 'Anime Recap' easter egg in the Japanese version of the game, and the roulette is available only in the Japanese version through a debug code. So, they aren't so super-secret, just only accessible in the Japanese game."

So once again the Japanese have gotten extras that we haven't. It figures.
